Lymph Drainage Therapy for Sports Injuries and Performance

This is my fourth and final blog in a series about the benefits of Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT).

I hope this series has provided you with a greater understanding of the numerous benefits of LDT. I will likely revisit this topic in the future, but this is it for now. I don’t want you to get sick of hearing about my love of lymph!
When provided by a trained massage practitioner, Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) can significantly reduce the healing of common sports injuries and improve overall athletic performance.

Lymph Drainage Therapy and Sprains and Strains

A sprained ligament or strained muscle can be a pain—literally and figuratively. Many athletes do not receive the right kind of treatment or allow enough healing time, which can result in re-injury. What is the difference between a sprain and a strain? A sprain involves a damaged ligament, whereas a strain involves a damaged (overworked) muscle. Receiving LDT for both can significantly reduce healing time and get you back on track.

Lymph Drainage Therapy and Athletic Performance

When I started my training in Lymph Drainage Therapy a few years ago, I was also competing in short distance triathlons. Receiving treatments during my training showed me firsthand how beneficial the work is for athletic performance. Getting a treatment before a race or a workout helps reduce inflammation and excess fluid. Many of my clients and I have benefitted from LDT with a sense of lightness and agility during activity. Because LDT gets rid of excess waste in the muscles, there is much less likelihood of cramping as well.

How Lymph Drainage Therapy Works

Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT), or Manual Lymphatic Drainage is the process of using gentle manual sequenced movements to help the Lymph system drain its stores of waste out of your body. LDT also helps to reduce tension on your body’s fascia, the fibrous tissue that encloses your muscles and organs. LDT benefits sports injuries and athletic performance by:

  • Reducing inflammation, swelling, and bruising
  • Decreasing scar tissue
  • Improving range of motion
  • Decreasing overall healing time
  • Increasing energy levels
