Massage Therapy for Concussions?

I get asked a lot about massage therapy for concussions. It’s actually not quite massage, but there is a type of manual bodywork called Craniosacral Therapy. Many people don’t know what this is, or how important it can be to alleviating concussion symptoms. Here are some of the many symptoms of concussions that can be addressed through craniosacral therapy:

  • Debilitating headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Lethargy
  • Double vision
  • Vertigo
  • Short-term memory loss

How does Craniosacral Therapy work?

Craniosacral Therapy works on the Central Nervous System, specifically the outer layer of the brain and the spinal cord called the dura mater and dural tube. With a very gentle touch, the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) can be enhanced. This leads to a relaxing of the symptoms.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with multiple people suffering from the symptoms of concussion. There is no specific protocol for craniosacral therapy other than tuning in to what the client needs for their body to return to its normal functioning. Sometimes frequent craniosacral therapy sessions are required until the severity of symptoms subsides.

I’ve also worked with multiple teenagers who have concussions. Younger people tend to have more body awareness and are able to identify the feelings and sensations that occur during a treatment. Adults benefit from this work as well, but sometimes it takes a little longer. As adults, we have layers of “armor” that can slow down the healing process. This “armor” can be the psychological and physiological barriers we create to protect ourselves from re-experiencing traumatic situations.

Even though the touch is subtle during a session, it is powerful because we are actually tapping into the body’s operating system. Many times, clients are surprised at the effectiveness of the work!

There are studies being conducted currently to help craniosacral therapy become recognized by the medical community as an option for treating concussions. The Ricky Williams Foundation is working to create an awareness of the benefits of Craniosacral Therapy. Here is a short video describing the work.
